Miss Demi Lovato !
So I recently came across a video on my YouTube suggestion page titled, "Demi Lovato: Simply Complicated - Official Documentary", and I was immediately enticed. For starters, I had no idea that Demi had even released or was working on a documentary, let alone uploading the entire film to YouTube. Oh and I kind of have a thing for documentaries, especially those that involve current pop culture identities - they're always oh so juicy ;)
You know, I'd never really listened to any of Demi's music beforehand, and if I had, it was probably because it was your standard top 40 playing on the radio. But that's not because I don't like her, because I lovvvvvvveee Camp Rock ;) Demi has just been one of those artists that I know of, but don't really follow or listen to, for reasons I truly don't know. I'd recently watched Chris Brown's "Welcome to My Life" and Lady Gaga's "Gaga: Five Foot Two" on Netflix and I thought why not? I like being taken behind the scenes and getting to know the vulnerable and private sides of these celebrities, so I clicked play...
And boy, when I came out on the other side of that documentary I had a newfound respect for Demi Lovato - I saw her in a way that I had never seen her before. I know the girl had previously gone through some self esteem issues regarding her body image, but I never knew it was as intense as it was and still is. I also had no idea she had a drug addiction.. WHOA ! Mind blown. She covered that up pretty well. And not to mention her voice. During the doco, there are clips of her throughout the recording process of her new album, "Tell Me You Love Me" and I was just so amazed at her pure, raw talent (corny, but very necessary).
But the main thing that stood out for me, was the confidence she had within herself and not being afraid of who she is and was. Demi was just so damn open about her past and her current struggles, it made her so real and relatable, and I like I mentioned before I love seeing that side of celebrities - because you don't often get to. The resilience and work ethic that girl has is extraordinary and again, so inspiring. You also witness the constant determination for growth - mentally and physically, and you feel a sense of connection and gratitude to her.
So... this newfound appreciation for Demi has resulted into a little obsession and I thought I would share that with you. Because if you haven't already I would highly suggest watching the documentary. I guarantee you will get hooked and start listening to her new album, which might I add has a few good bangers to belt out in the car (I may or may not have already done that). And you get to witness Demi's true beauty, from outward and within. So, I would suggest make a night of it, wash you hair, put on a mask, get a glass of wine, sit back in bed and chuck 'Simply Complicated' on, and you won't regret it.
I do just quickly want to mention that before I had even watched the doco, Demi had done a photo shoot with Vanity Fair a few years ago that really caught my eye. It was basically a nude photo shoot, super relaxed and natural without any big distractions and that's the first time I saw just how gorgeous and confident Demi was. It was around the same time she had come out about having body image issues, and I was just so amazed at how much guts she had to go from being so insecure to, literally baring it all. I was immediately drawn to those pictures, because I wanted to be that proud and confident with my own body and inner beauty - and good on her. I honestly think Demi Lovato is such an awesome role model and embodies all the things a woman should be.. not giving a damn about what anyone else thinks and being all for personal and physical growth!
*Snaps for empowering and encouraging women*
PS - If Demi (with DJ Khaled & Kehlani) happens to bring her #demixkhaled tour Downunder, fams you know what I'll be asking for ;) 3 artists for the price of one, so much diversity in that show.. can you imagine ?
